Trouble playing midi or mp3 files?

It should be possible to configure your web browser to automatically play
the midi and mp3 files when you click on links or files.
My browser is set up to to play both types of files with QuickTime.

I have found an irritating feature of Windows Media Player.
When you close Windows Media Player after having played a midi file
it will lower the midi (Synthesizer) volume to zero.
So when I don't get any sound when playing midi files with QuickTime
or other midi players I check the synthesizer volume.
Windows XP: Double click on loudspeaker icon in lower right task bar.
This should bring up the "large" volume control where you can set
the different output volumes like (Main Volume, Wave Volume,
Synthesizer Volume etc.
